Why I Love Self-Watering Planters: Put your plant in charge of watering itself perfectly at all times with less time and effort from you

Self-watering planters are easy to set up, easy to understand, and make watering your plants perfectly... so easy.

  • To set them up you place a wick (usually a piece of yarn or rope) in a pot by burying it in the soil with one end dangling down through the hole in the bottom of the pot into a bowl of water.
  • The water is wicked up through the wick into the soil in the pot as your plant uses up the water.
  • To keep it working, you just keep the water bowl full of water.  The plant drinks as much or as little as it wants.

When the self-watering plant hanger is made the way we make them at House of Spellbound Gardens, it is easy to see when to refill the water bowl, and the water bowl is a bit easier to reach since it hangs under the pot.

This is why I love them - not only are they easy to use, but almost all plants love them too.  Ferns, African violets, violas, pothos/epipremnum, pilea, tradescantia, ivy and many other plants THRIVE in these planters.  And I don't worry about underwatering or overwatering.  My indoor garden is a lush oasis without the fear of coming home to crispy dried up or soggy rotted plants.

A few, such as arid desert cacti and some succulents, prefer to dry out between waterings and are not good candidates for Self-Watering planters.  But many succulents will still do great in a Self-Watering planter as long as there is a lot of aeration in the soil.  Think 50:50 soil and perlite mix!

There is nothing better than coming home to beautiful plants and sweetened air, and nothing worse than coming home to sad dying plants that you just don't have the bandwidth to properly care for.  Using Self-Watering hanging planters has allowed me to take care of an entire plant collection with minimal time and effort required on my part.  And that's why I LOVE self-watering plant hangers, and I was thinking that you might, too.  They are time saving wonders, and well worth the added expense compared to a plain plant hanger.
